When Life Disappoints

During the summer of 2015, I decided to challenge myself by pursuing something I never thought I could do. I decided to apply for an internship at one of the world’s leading news companies in New York (I won’t name the company but I think it is one of the best in the world). I chose this company because it produces excellent video content which is what I am passionate about. I started researching more about the company, and I even reached out to several employees. This search continued for the next eight months and I was determined not to let anyone talk me out of it.

More than ten months later, I was still pursuing this dream and I still hadn’t been accepted after applying for more than five internship positions. I became so disappointed and frustrated because I had aimed so high only to achieve “nothing." Friends advised me and told me that sometimes in life you have to start small so as to get to the top. Another friend told me not to let this dream blind me from other opportunities. I eventually decided to apply for other jobs in Oklahoma where I currently reside, while hoping that I would somehow get accepted to this well-known company.

My life turned out totally different from what I expected. I did not get to work at my dream company but I learned so much from the pursuit of this internship.  I learned that life is not a vending machine;* you do not always get what you put into it. Secondly, when life turns out differently from what I expect, it’s always for a reason (unfortunately, I may not always know the reason). I also learned to let go and embrace life’s challenges while enjoying the present and not worrying about the future.

This week, I officially start my internship at a company in my area and I am looking forward to it. I had never heard of this company until a few weeks ago. I can officially say that my summer 2015 dream of doing what I never thought I would do is finally coming to pass.
